After all these years, one thing remains,
I still love to whittle and make people laugh.
My carving career began 40 years ago after a thirty foot fall landed me in the hospital. During a five month convalescence I picked up a piece of firewood and a pocket knife and began carving caricatures, of which I had sketched as a young boy growing up in Texas.
Within a couple of years, I was competing in carving competitions and bringing home some blue ribbons.
The years following would begin to bring national acclaim to my work as a woodcarver. In 1987, I started a very successful wholesale business reproducing my original carvings in resin. This company, Spit N’ Whittle, led to my work selling around the globe. During these years I also designed several successful gift lines for other major gift companies in the US.
Over the years I have been fortunate enough to share what I have learned about carving through teaching numerous live seminars nationwide, and now also teaches classes one on one over the internet.
For me, woodcarving has never lost its magic. Give me a good piece of basswood, a sharp knife, a funny story, and I’m content
Today, I live on a small island in Mexico where I continue to create my original woodcarvings and teach.
So If you’re ever down south, come see me. I’ll be sitting under a coconut tree, third one from the sunset, with a margarita in one hand, and my knife in the other. Trying to carve something that make folks smile.
