General Design/Carve class info

My design/Carve classes are the next step in a carvers journey toward learning to create and carve your own ideas. I compare it to a singer who starts out singing other people’s songs and wants to move on to singing their own songs.

I will help you learn to develop your ideas, draw out patterns, rough cut patterns on a bandsaw, and carve your own ideas. I work with each student on their individual skill level. So no need to worry if you're a beginner. I will also cover sharpening and discuss painting and finishing techniques. Basically, I will try to answer any question you have concerning creating and finishing a caricature carving in my style.

I supply all the wood and it is included in the cost of the class. Classes are usually five days and are limited to eight students per class. Classes normally begin at 9AM and end at 4PM.

As for tools needed, I use primarily a knife, but a few gouges can be helpful to roughout and finish a carving. Here is the basic tools I would suggest bringing to my class.

  1. A good carving knife. I use exclusively My Helvie, 2/14” Flex blade signature knife. But whatever knife you are comfortable with will work.

  2. large fishtail #3 or#5 palm gouge. 3/4'“ or larger.

  3. #9, 1/2#, Palm U gouge

  4. #9, at least 3/4” or larger Palm U Gouge

  5. #11 3/16” Palm U gouge

  6. 1/8” 60degree true V palm gouge

I prefer Stubai gouges, but any good brand will do. You can also bring any other tools that are your favorites. this is simply my list of recommendations.

I hold live design/carve classes in various locations around the US and here at my home in Mexico.
